Dipsacus fullonum “wild teasel” – This escaped herbaceous biennial plant has become super invasive in North America and other parts of the world. And it is a beautiful spikey savage. Leaves, stem, and flower head; all require leather gloves to handle it.
I decided to present this plant as part of my series of “ditch beauties”. Not because it is a desirable plant, but because it has become so invasive I don’t believe we will ever be rid of it. I expect it will be part of the environment for the foreseeable future. Steps should certainly be taken to contain it’s pervasive habits. It occupies nearly all the roadside ditches, crowding out most everything except the other invasives.
The ceramic piece is by artist Ann Mendershausen. The books are some of the ecological philosophy works of Timothy Morton.
