News from the veggie garden project

garden with bean polesThe garden is growing by leaps and bounds. The red noodle beans have reached the top of the poles and don’t know where to go from there. The amaranthus (love lies bleeding) is getting taller and taller. It’s already outgrown the plants I had in California (and it isn’t finished). The Jing orange and Burmese okras are just beginning to develop pods. The orange ones are beautiful.

The Blue tomatoes are recumbent on their bed of wheat straw. I intended to stake them up, but they grew so fast kale tomatoes squashduring the persistent rain in early June that I couldn’t fasten them up to poles. So they will have to just lay about. The plants are covered with flowers and tomatoes in all stages of development. I reckon none are going to ripen for another couple weeks or more.

The baby boom zucchini is really producing now. I love the speed with which the squash fruits and hold onto their blossoms. Wonderful!

zucchini and okraI haven’t mentioned the melons much before. I have 2 hills each of 2 varieties. According to my seed source, one variety, Ananas d’Amerique a Chair Verte was grown by Thomas Jefferson. The other is a French variety, Charentais. I have never grown melon before and promise to be delighted if each plant will produce one melon each.
